Background of the Study

Social media platforms, which include tools like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube, have transformed the landscape of communication and learning across various sectors, including education. In nursing education, the use of social media as a learning tool has gained popularity as it offers students easy access to educational resources, peer collaboration, and interactive learning opportunities. University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital is one of the institutions exploring the use of social media to enhance nursing education by providing students with platforms for knowledge sharing, discussion of clinical topics, and access to supplementary learning materials (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

Research has shown that social media can facilitate collaborative learning by enabling students to engage in discussions, share insights, and support each other in the learning process. Platforms like YouTube provide access to instructional videos, while WhatsApp groups offer an avenue for peer-to-peer communication and mentorship. The integration of social media into nursing education can enhance students' learning experience by providing alternative ways to engage with content, especially in resource-limited environments (Okoro & Adebayo, 2024).

However, the effectiveness of social media as a learning tool in nursing education remains a subject of debate. While it offers numerous advantages, there are concerns about distractions, misinformation, and the potential for decreased face-to-face interaction. This study aims to investigate the extent to which social media is used as a learning tool by nursing students at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and its impact on their academic performance and clinical learning.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread use of social media, there is limited research on its specific impact on nursing education at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. While social media has the potential to enhance learning, its effectiveness in nursing education is not well understood. This study seeks to explore how nursing students use social media as a learning tool, the benefits they derive from it, and the challenges they face in integrating social media into their academic and clinical training.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the use of social media as a learning tool among nursing students at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

2. To assess the impact of social media on the academic performance and clinical learning of nursing students.

3. To identify the challenges nursing students face in using social media as a learning tool and recommend strategies for maximizing its benefits.

Research Questions

1. How do nursing students at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital use social media as a learning tool?

2. What is the impact of social media use on the academic performance and clinical learning of nursing students?

3. What challenges do nursing students face in using social media for learning, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital use social media effectively as a learning tool.

2. The use of social media positively impacts the academic performance and clinical learning of nursing students.

3. There are significant challenges faced by nursing students in using social media as a learning tool, which affect its effectiveness in nursing education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and their use of social media as a learning tool. Limitations include the possibility of self-reporting bias and the inability to measure the full range of social media platforms and their diverse educational content.
